How are you Paying It Forward?

You probably remember the movie Pay It Forward. If you don’t remember it, here is a refresher for you: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0223897/. This movie advocated doing three big things for others that they could not do. Those people on the receiving end of the favors would not move forward and find three new ways to help others. In this way, the world would be a better place.

Have you thought about how you can do that in your life? It is such a simple idea but really a very strong idea when you put it into effect. If you set a goal for yourself to do three things to help three people next week and that same thinking followed for those people, you could make a community that much stronger.

If you are interested in learning more about how people are paying it forward in the United State, take a look at the following website: http://www.agreeley.com/articles/civic.html. This talks about one professor who argues that there is less volunteering today while the author says there is more. How much of a difference are you making in your community today with your volunteering? This comes back to the idea of pay it forward. Here is another view of volunteering and why it is so important: http://www.livingprimetime.com/aprissue/volunteering.htm.

This is a good thought as you go about your week. From the previous link, many people think that they get as much out of the volunteering as they put in. People report that they feel more optimistic and better about themselves. If you are looking for a morale booster, pay it forward and see where it takes you. Another way to use this to your benefit is to develop new skills you want to develop through working at nonprofits. Some people will want to gain more fundraising exposure and develop these skills while working for a nonprofit. You can receive as much as you want out of volunteering while giving others chances they would not have otherwise.
